History
Founded around 1882 during construction of a major new railroad line from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi, Slidell began as a building camp at the first high ground north of Lake Pontchartrain, eventually growing into a city. Chartered as a town in 1888 by the Louisiana legislature, the first streets were laid out in a grid pattern in 1888 shortly before, east of the railroad for the most part, running three blocks along the road.
During the first 30 years of its existence, Slidell developed a creosote plant, a large lumber mill and shipyard and one of the country’s largest brick manufacturing facilities. The Slidell shipyard was a significant factor in both World War I and World War II, when residents worked in New Orleans ship, tank and airplane construction, contributing so much to the war effort.
In the 1960’s, Slidell began to take on the modern profile it bears today as the middle of three local sites in NASA’s lunar landing program and the growth hasn’t stopped. Businesses thrive, neighbors know each other by their first name and live near the lake is good.
