Mandeville, LA Area Guide

General Information

Sitting on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Mandeville is a mere one hour north of New Orleans, a steadily growing city dedicated to maintaining its beauty and culture while being a vital business and residential community.

The oldest inhabited locale in St. Tammany Parish, Lake Pontchartrain is a big part of life in Mandeville. Residents enjoy the marinas, and their life on the water as well as cultural events and love knowing their neighbors by their first names. Visit the Mandeville Trailhead, a local hub of activities for residents and visitors. Here there is a great place for the children to play, an amphitheatre, a local farmer’s market and a depot museum that will walk you through the history of Mandeville.

Once known as a bedroom community of New Orleans, today Mandeville is a city in its own right, named one of the Relocate America Top 100 Places to Live in 2004-2005, 2007-2009. Its schools lead the way in LEAP test scores, with education being a big factor for new residents considering a move. Pine forests and waterways make it a prime location for residential development and its ready access to the interstate, highways and waterways offers residents many options to enjoy. Part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner metropolitan area, Mandeville is teeming with business opportunities, friendly neighborhoods and access not just to local activities but also just a hop, skip and a jump to New Orleans for big city fun.

History

Long an agricultural area, Mandeville was laid out in 1834 by Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville and in 1840, Mandeville was incorporated as a town, quickly becoming a summer destination for the well-to-do in New Orleans residents. Looking to escape the city heat, by the end of the Victorian era, it had become the weekend getaway destination by the middle class as well, with everyone taking the new regular daily steamboat back and forth. Bands would play music on the ships going across the lake and at pavilions and dance halls in Mandeville, with the town becoming one of the first places where the new sound of ‘jazz’ was heard. Two buildings from the early days of jazz still stand in Mandeville, Ruby’s Roadhouse (in continuous operations since the 20’s) and the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dew Drop closed during the depression but was reopened in 2000 as the Dew Drop Jazz and Social Hall, a popular place for residents and visitors alike to have a good time.

Mandeville is famous for the Causeway, the longest over-water bridge in the country (maybe the world). 26 miles across an open lake from Mandeville to Metairie.  In 1956, Lake Pontchartrain Causeway’s first span opened to traffic, with a second span added in 1969. This new road created growth in Mandeville and the areas around it, making Mandeville an easy commute for people who worked in New Orleans, with the trend increasing in the 80’s and 90’s, bringing Mandeville and New Orleans closer together.
